Kapwani is a talented singer coming out of Atlanta, GA. Her latest EP, “Everything Will Be Okay,” touches on love and heartbreak, + everything in between. We interviewed the soulful singer to learn a little more about her as an artist and musician:

How did you get your start in pursuing music?

Well, I have been singing since a kid. I pretty much have been pursuing music my entire life. I was in choir and orchestra for about seven years. Once I got to college one of my friends convinced me to record a song, and it wasn’t that bad. So I kept at it and people started to really like my music. Also, music is just a great love of mine.

What does your musical process look like?

I don’t have a disciplined musical process (pls don’t judge me lol) I really just have to be in the mood and feel the music. But if you want to know how I construct a song most times I listen to beats first and then write with it, or I write lyrics whenever and then find a beat for it.

How would you best describe your sound?

This is a tricky one because I feel like I am getting close to my sound but not fully there but for these purposes, I would consider myself in the r&b realm. However, I don’t want to limit myself to just that.

What are some of your favorite themes to discuss in your music?

Love, I love to sing about love. I can sing about the good and the bad of love, the duality is what I like most. I also like to sing about my emotions or how I feel in the moment, past, or future me.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

I draw inspiration from my life experiences. I feel that art is portraying life from your point of view, so when I create music I like to pull inspiration from real memories of my own and tell the story just in my own way.

Tell me a little about “Jaded.” How did it come about and where did the inspiration for the video come from?

Jaded is a song about a couple that is trying to figure out their misunderstandings of one another like most relationships, but in the song, the woman is getting to the point of feeling drained. She’s contemplating on what she can do differently for herself. Now, the video inspiration comes from the movie Belly, with a little twist that my manager and I put in.

How would you describe your EP “Everything Will Be Okay”?

I would describe it as real and vulnerable.
